What is Chantix (varenicline)?
Chantix is a smoking cession prescription medication from Pfizer Inc. that helps adults to quit
smoking. It gives smokers a better chance to quit smoking than Zyban®
* medication.
Is it FDA Approved?
Yes, Chantix was approved by the FDA in May 2006. Please see this
FDA link.
How long should the medication be taken?
Majority of people take it for twelve-weeks. If you totally quit smoking after
completing the twelve-weeks, then ask your physician if an additional
twelve-weeks of this medication would help you stay cigarette-free. Please insure that
you take this medication as instructed by your doctor.
How does Chantix work?
1. When you smoke, nicotine is absorbed into the blood and travels to the brain.
2. In the brain, there are receptors for nicotine. The nicotine inhaled attaches
to these receptors.
3. This send a message to the brain to release a chemical called dopamine.
Dopamine gives a feeling of pleasure but only lasts for short time. The body
wants to repeat this feeling of pleasure.
4. It is believed, based on research, that it works by blocking nicotine
from attaching to these receptors. Chantix activates these receptors causing a
reduced release of dopamine compared to nicotine.
Does it contain any nicotine?
No, Chantix does not contain any nicotine as it works by blocking nicotine from
attaching to the brain receptors.
